Job Description



The Director of Community Services will have skills and experience necessary to provide advice and facilitate Council’s Community Strategic Planning, Delivery Program and Operational Plans.

The position reports to the General Manager and, in addition to the above Governance responsibilities, will oversee Council’s community development, library services, tourism, youth and children’s services and social media communication.

The successful applicant possessing the required ability will be offered a remuneration package of around $150,000.

Reporting to the Director of Engineering Services, you will have overall responsibility for managing the effective and timely delivery of all construction and maintenance initiatives across the region’s network of state, regional and rural roads, and related engineering infrastructure. Key specifics will include workforce, resource and asset planning, external contractor/consultant liaison, performance monitoring and providing advice to a range of internal customers.

A qualified Civil Engineer or equivalent local government experience and a member of at least one industry association, you will have a strong background in civil construction where the emphasis has been on managing road and bridge-based activities. You will also have hands-on experience across a broad range of construction and rehabilitation techniques including low traffic volume and low cost solutions for unsealed, natural formation works. From a personal perspective, you will be a natural communicator who leads by example and can quickly build credibility at all levels.

How can I ensure that I submit the best application possible?

So that your application is competitive, ensure that you submit a current resume, at least two referees with current contact details, a written response to the selection criteria and short covering letter. A signed copy of the employment application cover sheet should also be included. For more information please read the “A Guide for Job Applications”

When will I be notified?

After a position has closed, interviews are usually held one week later. All unsuccessful applicants are notified via mail at this stage. If you are successful in gaining an interview, please allow 7 working days for Council to contact you. If you were the successful applicant you will be contacted via phone. All unsuccessful applicants will be notified in writing. 

How do I know if I got an interview?

Council will contact you to arrange a suitable time for an interview shortly after the application closing date.  

I left something out of my application

Information can be added to your application at any time until the closing date. After this time, if you are successful in gaining an interview you can bring any additional information to the interview.

Can I put my application on file for future jobs?

Council maintains a register of people seeking future employment opportunities; however you are encouraged to apply for specific positions that may be advertised by Council in the Coonamble Times newspaper and website.
