Coonamble and Gulargambone are located on the Castlereagh Highway, part of the GREAT INLAND WAY which is emerging as an alternate route to north Queensland from Victoria and South Australia due to its reputation as a ‘flat track’ for caravans, heavy vehicles and those seeking an easier route than the Newell Highway.
Coonamble has a unique advantage over most other NSW towns in that there are no restrictions on road train and B-double access on roads throughout the Shire. The sealing of the road from Coonamble through Pilliga to Wee Waa and Narrabri has opened up another road route.
An upgrade of the railway branch line from Dubbo to Coonamble was completed in 2014 increasing both the loading capacity and speed of trains.

Coonamble Shire Council owns a fully licensed aerodrome which they maintain to maximum CASA Standards. The airport is approximately 3 kilometres from Coonamble Post Office. The aerodrome is very user-friendly, the main strip is sealed so is usable in all weather and about 1500m long. It is permanently lit for night landings/takeoffs, refueling facilities are available by contacting the local Aero Club contact details on the Club house door.
