Coonamble and Gulargambone are located on the Castlereagh Highway, part of the GREAT INLAND WAY which is emerging as an alternate route to north Queensland from Victoria and South Australia due to its reputation as a ‘flat track’ for caravans, heavy vehicles and those seeking an easier route than the Newell Highway.

Coonamble has a unique advantage over most other NSW towns in that there are no restrictions on road train and B-double access on roads throughout the Shire. The sealing of the road from Coonamble through Pilliga to Wee Waa and Narrabri has opened up another road route.

An upgrade of the railway branch line from Dubbo to Coonamble was completed in 2014 increasing both the loading capacity and speed of trains. The proposed Inland Rail route will travel through part of the Coonamble Shire. Coonamble Shire Council continues to work closely with ARTC to investigate opportunities for our community during and after the construction of the Inland Rail.

Coonamble Shire Council operates a fully licensed airport which is maintained to stringent CASA standards. The user-friendly airport is approximately 3 kilometres from Coonamble Post Office. The 1,500m long sealed main strip is usable in all weather and is permanently lit for night landings and take offs. Refuelling facilities are available by contacting the Coonamble Aero Club; see the Club House for contact details
